Guterres warns global food system still faces hunger and food insecurity crisis

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that hunger remains at an unacceptable level around the world and stressed the need for practical action to ensure access to safe and sufficient food for all people.

In a post on his social media account on Monday, Oct. 27, he said that despite progress in recent decades, the global food system still faces serious challenges.

Reiterating the inherent right of all people to access food, Guterres called on countries to turn their commitments into practical steps and to provide sustainable, healthy and fair food systems.

Earlier, the United Nations said in a report that food insecurity and malnutrition in Afghanistan had reached alarming levels. The report, published on Thursday, Oct. 23, showed that 15.9 million people in Afghanistan are facing acute food insecurity and that acute malnutrition in the country has reached its highest level.

The worsening food crisis in Afghanistan is one of the consequences of the instability of the global food system and the country’s complex political and economic conditions, which have severely deepened the humanitarian situation.
