Trump calls for immediate renaming of Somaliland at Ohio rally
US President Donald Trump called for Somaliland to be renamed immediately at an election rally in Ohio, referring to a region that has not been recognised by any country as an independent state.
Trump claimed Somaliland is fundamentally different from Somalia and should not be known by that name. In his remarks, he used the term “land of Somalia” to refer to the region.
In another part of his speech, the US president made claims about Somali migrants in the United States, particularly in the state of Minnesota, alleging increased taxes and looting of the state’s budget, and said Somaliland was separate from Somalia.
Somaliland is located in the Horn of Africa, and separatists in the region, despite efforts to expand foreign ties, have still not been recognised by any government in the world as an independent country. Trump has previously also proposed changing the names of a number of geographic locations.
