226 Homes Built for Kunar Earthquake Survivors as Some Still in Temporary Shelters

In Nurgal district of Kunar province, 226 houses have been built for families who lost their homes in last year’s earthquake; however, some affected families are still living in temporary shelters.

Officials of the Taliban administration in Kunar say the project was completed in six months at a cost of about $1 million, with financial support from the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund and cooperation from the Norwegian Committee. According to them, the houses have been handed over to needy families, and each home has two rooms, a kitchen and a courtyard.

The head of the Taliban administration’s economy department in Kunar told state-run television controlled by the group that the newly built houses have been distributed to families affected by the earthquake.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs had previously warned that one year after the Kunar earthquake, some families were still living in temporary shelters, and the approaching winter season was making their situation more difficult.

A magnitude 6 earthquake struck Kunar, Nangarhar, Laghman and surrounding areas in early September last year. More than 2,000 people were killed in the disaster, and thousands of homes were either completely or partially destroyed.
