Taliban Says More Than 100,000 Security Cameras Installed Across Afghanistan

The Taliban administration has announced that the number of security cameras across Afghanistan has risen to more than 100,000, and says the process will continue in line with security needs. However, the lack of a stable electricity supply in some cities is seen as one of the challenges that could reduce the effectiveness of these systems.

Abdul Mateen Qani, spokesman for the Taliban-run Ministry of Interior, said the use of security cameras plays a role in maintaining security, identifying criminals and following up on criminal incidents. He added that the ministry is seeking to make surveillance systems smarter and install advanced security cameras.

According to Qani, these cameras have been installed on highways, dams, international airports, markets and especially in Kabul. He claimed that the installation process for these devices has been completed across the country.

The large-scale installation of security cameras began in 2022, first in Kabul and then expanded to other provinces. The process developed in the following years and now, according to the Taliban administration’s claim, has been implemented in more parts of the country.

The Taliban-run Ministry of Interior is responsible for managing the police and part of the internal security structure. Kabul was the first city where the large-scale installation of security cameras began, and the programme was then expanded to other provinces as well.
