Germany delays planned Merz-Trump call
The German government said a planned phone call between German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and U.S. President Donald Trump, which was due to take place on Wednesday, has been postponed by the German side.
German government spokesman Stefan Kornelius said at a news conference that the call had been scheduled in the chancellor’s diary, but Germany moved it to another time. He added that no new date for the conversation has yet been set.
The German government spokesman declined to explain the reason for the decision. However, the delay comes as Trump’s administration has in recent months publicly criticised Germany’s immigration policy and backed the far-right Alternative for Germany party.
Trump on Tuesday praised the result of a state election in Germany on the Truth Social platform, writing that the party was gaining strength after voters grew tired of immigration rules. The Alternative for Germany party won Sunday’s state election in Saxony-Anhalt.
MGGA is an abbreviation of the slogan “Make Germany Great Again,” a phrase Trump has used in continued support of the party. Alternative for Germany is regarded as one of the far-right parties in German politics.
