Floods in Nuristan Leave 23 Dead and Over 100 Missing
Floodwaters in the central area of Nuristan province have claimed the lives of at least 23 people, with more than 100 others reported missing, raising concerns over escalating casualties.
The Disaster Preparedness Department, operating under the Taliban administration, stated that the bodies of 15 victims have been recovered so far, and search operations are ongoing. Taj Mohammad Hemat, the department’s deputy spokesperson, confirmed that efforts to locate the missing individuals continue.
According to reports, seven houses were completely destroyed and 23 were partially damaged in the incident. Additionally, 70 shops and 11 hotels in Parun city suffered full or partial damage, and 40 vehicles were lost.
The flooding followed heavy rainfall in Parun city, the provincial capital of Nuristan, yesterday. Damage to the roads leading to the city has hindered rescue teams and the delivery of emergency aid, potentially affecting response efforts for those affected.
Nuristan is a mountainous and remote province in eastern Afghanistan that faces the threat of sudden floods every rainy season.
