Pakistan Detains 121 Afghan Nationals in Lahore Amid Rising Deportations

Pakistani police have detained 121 Afghan nationals during a security operation in the city of Lahore. According to Pakistani media reports on Saturday, July 18, after verifying residency documents, 28 individuals with valid papers were released, while 93 others without proper documentation were transferred to a detention center in Lahore for legal processing.
According to these reports, the transfer to the detention center aims to further review the residency status of these individuals and determine their fate. No additional details about the detainees’ conditions have been released so far.
This incident occurs amid escalating tensions between the Taliban administration and Pakistan in recent months, with increased arrests and deportations of Afghan migrants from Pakistan. Many migrant families express serious concerns about their future and residency status.
Human rights organizations have previously warned against inappropriate treatment of Afghan migrants in some countries, emphasizing the need to respect their human rights and dignity. These organizations advocate for responsible management of the migrant return process and prevention of any violent conduct.
Meanwhile, the Taliban administration reported that just in the past day, 3,753 individuals were returned to Afghanistan through various border crossings. Despite the rising number of returnees, concerns persist over the lack of clear plans for their settlement and support within the country.
