Russian Missile Attacks on Kyiv Kill 9, Injure 46 Amid Ongoing Rescue Efforts

Following extensive Russian missile and drone attacks on Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, at least nine people have been killed and 46 others injured. City officials announced that rescue operations are ongoing, with the possibility of the casualty count rising. Vitali Klitschko, mayor of Kyiv, stated that the attacks early Monday targeted several high-rise buildings. He noted that a 30-story building in the Darnytskyi district caught fire, and in the historic Podil district, two buildings—one 21 stories and the other 9 stories—were damaged, with rescue operations lasting several hours. Timur Tekachenko, a Kyiv military official, confirmed that at least nine deaths have been recorded and 46 injured people have been transferred to medical centers from various parts of the city. He added that at least 15 residential buildings were either destroyed or severely damaged as a result of these attacks. These assaults come after a deadly Russian offensive last week, which killed 31 people in Kyiv alone. The increase in attacks on residential areas has heightened concerns about civilian safety. According to Reuters, simultaneously with the Russian missile and drone launches, Poland—a NATO and EU member neighboring Ukraine—briefly scrambled its fighter jets as a precautionary measure. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had warned Kyiv residents about the possibility of a new Russian invasion just one day before these attacks.
