Heavy Rains Cause Three Building Collapses in Mumbai, Killing Six Including Five Children

Heavy rains in Mumbai, India, have caused the collapse of three residential buildings in a slum area, resulting in at least six deaths, including five children and one woman.
Reuters reported on Monday, July 6, that the incident occurred in the ‘Mankhurd’ area of Mumbai, a neighborhood characterized by dense settlements and structurally weak buildings, which are typically vulnerable to monsoon rains.
Local officials stated that the heavy rains continue to trigger landslides along the main highway between Mumbai and Pune. This has led to the closure of the highway and caused disruptions to traffic between the two cities.
Reports indicate that the heavy rainfall has not only affected road traffic but has also led to the suspension of some flights and long-distance train services.
India’s Meteorological Department announced that rainfall amounts in Mumbai have exceeded 100 millimeters, with some areas recording up to 161 millimeters. Every year during the monsoon season, Mumbai faces risks of flooding and the collapse of dilapidated buildings.
