Afghan Freedom Front Claims Deadly Attack on Taliban Morality Police in Herat

The Afghan Freedom Front has announced that its forces targeted a gathering of Taliban morality police at the entrance of their department in Herat on Friday evening, June 12. According to the front, three Taliban morality police members were killed and two others wounded in the attack.

The operation reportedly took place around 10 p.m. local time. The Freedom Front, in a message published on the social media platform X, claimed responsibility for the incident, emphasizing that members and bases of the Taliban morality police are deemed “legitimate targets”.

Davood Naji, the political head of the Freedom Front, told Afghanistan International, “We spoke and we acted.” He had earlier voiced opposition to the Taliban’s security and control structures.

Publishing a video of the attack, the Freedom Front stated that the operation was in response to what it described as “harassment of women and suppression of public protests” by the Taliban morality police in Herat. In recent months, the Taliban’s morality police have faced significant criticism both domestically and internationally for imposing extensive restrictions on women and cracking down on protesters.

The front also urged residents of Herat to keep a safe distance from military vehicles and gathering points of the Taliban forces to protect their safety. So far, the Taliban administration has not issued an official response regarding the attack.
