UNAMA Reports Afghanistan Faces Severe Droughts and Flash Floods Amid Climate Crisis

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), coinciding with World Environment Day, has stated that Afghanistan is grappling with severe and unpredictable climate events, ranging from widespread droughts to sudden flash floods. These events have destroyed homes, agricultural lands, and livelihoods of the residents.
According to the report, climate change in recent years has placed unprecedented pressure on local communities, causing serious economic and social challenges for many families across different parts of the country. Due to its geographical location and vulnerable infrastructure, Afghanistan is among the countries most severely affected by climate change.
UNAMA also emphasized that despite these threats, local communities in various parts of the country have initiated measures to adapt to climate change. These actions include community-led initiatives for better water resource management, protecting agricultural areas, and reducing flood-related risks.
As the consequences of climate change intensify, the need for effective planning, transparent resource management, and cooperation among responsible bodies, including the Taliban administration, becomes increasingly critical. Environmental experts stress that without sustainable policies and practical support for vulnerable communities, damages from severe climate events will continue to rise.
