Significant Increase in Charas Cultivation Reported in Logar Province

Officials from the Agriculture Department in Logar province have announced a notable rise in the cultivation of charas in the provincial center and several districts. According to them, the Taliban administration is paying special attention to expanding this crop, considering it a suitable alternative to opium poppy.

Nasiruddin Behij, head of agricultural affairs at the department, stated that charas requires less water and chemical fertilizer compared to many other plants, while its yield is also satisfactory. He emphasized that expanding this cultivation could be economically beneficial for farmers.

Meanwhile, several farmers in Logar say that although the charas harvest takes relatively longer to obtain, it sells at an appropriate price in the market and provides a decent income for rural residents.

Logar is one of the agricultural provinces south of Kabul, with the economy of a large portion of its population relying on agriculture. However, experts have consistently stressed the need for clear and sustainable agricultural policies to protect farmers from continuous changes and short-term decisions.
