Taliban Governor in Paktia Says Morality Law Fully Enforced

The Taliban governor in Paktia has said that the regime’s morality law has been implemented “100%”.

Amid stepped-up oversight of the enforcement of the “morality law,” Mehrullah Hamad, the Taliban governor in Paktia, said he had applied the law “100%” to all government employees in the province.

According to a statement from the Taliban governor’s office in Paktia, Hamad made the remarks at a regular meeting of the committee overseeing the implementation of the “morality law.” He also said that people in Afghanistan, because of Taliban rule, were prepared to “live according to Sharia and save themselves from the torment of the hereafter.”

The law on the promotion of virtue and prevention of vice is regarded as one of the strictest laws of the Taliban era since their return to power. At the order of Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada, the Taliban leader, regular monitoring meetings chaired by governors are held in all provinces to enforce the law.

According to the Taliban leader, enforcing the promotion of virtue and prevention of vice is considered one of the “most important responsibilities,” and he has previously claimed that one of the special aims of the Taliban’s war was the “implementation of the promotion of virtue and prevention of vice.”

Critics, meanwhile, have warned that the law has led to violations of citizens’ basic rights, especially those of women, and by restricting their presence has pushed women out of large areas of public life.
