Pakistan and China Pledge Closer Coordination on Afghanistan

Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that Pakistan and China have agreed in a joint statement to maintain close coordination and expand bilateral relations concerning Afghanistan. The statement emphasized the importance of developments in Afghanistan and the continuation of joint consultations.

According to the statement, the trilateral talks held in April 2026 among China, Pakistan, and representatives of the Taliban administration were deemed significant, with China welcoming the facilitation of dialogue between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Both parties described these contacts as part of efforts to manage regional political and security issues.

The joint statement also highlighted extensive cooperation between Islamabad and Beijing within the framework of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The development of Gwadar Port, commercial cooperation, agriculture, energy, and artificial intelligence were noted as key areas of agreement between the two countries.

Furthermore, military cooperation and counter-terrorism efforts, developments in the Middle East, and regional stability were among other topics addressed in the statement. This comes as Afghanistan has, in recent years, become a central focus of regional engagements, with neighboring countries seeking to establish new frameworks for cooperation with the Taliban administration.
