Kabul and Tehran Discuss 500 kV Power Transmission Line and Renewable Energy Cooperation

Alireza Beygdeli, acting head of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s embassy in Kabul, met with Abdul Haq Hamkar, CEO of the Barshna Company, to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation in the electricity and energy sectors. The main focus of the meeting was the 500-kilovolt power transmission line project, the development of renewable energies, and investment opportunities in Afghanistan’s energy sector.
According to a statement from Barshna Company, both parties emphasized the importance of strengthening joint cooperation to develop energy infrastructure. The 500-kilovolt transmission line project was described as a significant step to facilitate energy exchange between the two countries; a project that, if realized, could increase electricity transmission capacity in the region.
The CEO of Barshna highlighted Afghanistan’s existing potential in the energy sector, noting the country has substantial investment opportunities in various energy fields. He added that enhanced cooperation between Kabul and Tehran could contribute to sustainable development in the sector and improve electricity access in some areas.
In response, the acting head of the Iranian embassy stated that Iran is interested in expanding economic, trade, and energy cooperation with Afghanistan. He also expressed readiness to collaborate in renewable energy and described this area as a suitable opportunity to strengthen regional cooperation.
Beygdeli subsequently invited the CEO of Barshna to visit Iran to advance technical talks and expedite practical measures. At the end of the meeting, Barshna Company presented a handicraft piece made from Badakhshan lapis lazuli to the Iranian embassy’s acting head. Both sides emphasized continuing the meetings and maintaining close coordination.
