Taliban’s Environmental Protection Department Consults UN-Habitat on Azerbaijan Conference Participation

The General Directorate of Environmental Protection under Taliban administration has announced that Mawlawi Muttia-ul-Haq Khalis, head of the department, met with Stephen Lewis, head of UN-Habitat (the United Nations Human Settlements Programme), and his delegation to discuss Afghanistan’s participation in an international conference in Azerbaijan.

According to the department’s press release, the meeting reviewed the manner and conditions of Afghanistan’s delegation participation, led by the General Directorate of Environmental Protection, at this conference. No further details were provided regarding the level of participation or the conference’s date.

Both parties emphasized strengthening coordination between the department and UN-Habitat. The General Directorate stated that it has been agreed that, given the country’s environmental challenges and priorities, Afghanistan’s issues will be presented to the international community at this conference.

In recent years, Afghanistan has faced serious environmental challenges, including drought, water shortages, and air pollution in some urban areas; issues that require regional and international cooperation.
