Abu Obeida Calls for New Fronts Against Israel

Abu Obeida, spokesman for Hamas’s armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, called for the opening of “new fronts” against Israel, saying he regards the Oct. 7 attack as a “military masterpiece” and claiming the operation has called Israel’s security doctrine into question.

In remarks published by Quds and cited by the Mehr news agency, he marked three years since the “Al-Aqsa Flood operation” and added that, according to him, after it there was “nothing left of deterrence” and nothing left of the “final victory.” Abu Obeida also paid tribute to the commanders, fighters and martyrs of the operation.

In another part of his remarks, the Qassam spokesman addressed residents of Gaza, saying the territory has, in his words, paid a “heavy price,” but praised the “performance” of the people of Gaza and claimed that the situation has awakened the “conscience of the free people” and exposed those who cooperated with the “occupiers.”

He also said that Oct. 7 was the result of careful “planning and execution,” claiming that “friend and foe” alike have acknowledged its greatness. Abu Obeida added that resistance forces used opportunities, including what he called Netanyahu’s “narcissism,” to advance the operation.

Abu Obeida went on to cite the “desecration of Al-Aqsa Mosque” and the “pain of Gaza” as factors in this “awakening,” and said countries such as Sudan and Libya could, in his view, play a role alongside Yemen, Lebanon, Iraq and Iran. Referring to the effectiveness of drones, he questioned what the consequences would be if a “western front” were opened against Israel.

The Qassam Brigades are Hamas’s military wing, a group that, after the events of Oct. 7 and the war in Gaza, has been alongside other Palestinian armed groups at the center of major security tensions in the region.
