Israel Intensifies Attacks on Lebanon Amid Talks of Possible Direct Negotiations

While some American circles speak of the possibility of direct negotiations between Tel Aviv and Beirut, Israeli attacks on parts of southern Lebanon have intensified in recent days. These developments occur amid growing concerns over the expansion of regional conflicts and their impact on potential talks between the US and Iran.
According to Al Jazeera, Israel has expanded the scope of its military operations and threatened to escalate the war to achieve what it calls a “decisive victory” on the northern front. Meanwhile, media sources report ongoing missile attacks and destruction in various areas of southern Lebanon.
Walid Al-Omari, Al Jazeera’s bureau chief in Ramallah, described Israel’s claim of assassinating Ahmad Balout, a commander of Hezbollah’s Rizwan Force in Beirut, as a dangerous turning point. He stated that this action paved the way for expanding military operations in southern Lebanon.
Al-Omari believes Israel is trying to create new facts on the ground before a new round of talks begins in Washington to secure an upper hand in any potential negotiations. He also noted Tel Aviv’s concerns over any possible US-Iran deal that could limit the scope of military operations in Lebanon.
The report indicates that in recent days, the demolition of villages in southern Lebanon has increased, with the so-called “Yellow Line” extending to areas beyond the Litani River. It is said that the objective of these actions is to consolidate the military position ahead of any possible diplomatic developments.
The Al Jazeera bureau chief in Ramallah further added that connecting the fronts of Lebanon, Gaza, Yemen, and Iran features prominently in Israel’s internal analyses. Some factions consider any end to the war without meeting declared objectives—such as the disarmament of Hezbollah and Hamas—a political and military defeat.
He also mentioned that in this context, there is discussion about the potential resumption of attacks against targets in Iran, a topic that could affect the course of any diplomatic efforts in the region. Nonetheless, the fate of these developments will depend on the progress of negotiations and the political decisions of the main actors involved.
