Taliban Ministry Stresses Full Commitment to Mes Aynak Copper Project

The Taliban’s Ministry of Mines and Petroleum has stated that in a meeting with officials from the contracting company of the Mes Aynak copper project, there was an emphasis on the full implementation of contractual obligations and accelerating the project’s practical progress. The meeting took place in Kabul with the presence of Hidayatullah Badri, the acting minister, the Chinese ambassador, the general manager of MCCT, and officials from the MJAM company.
According to the ministry’s statement, both parties discussed the failure to fulfill some of the contractual obligations as well as the project’s progress rate. Officials from MCCT pledged during the meeting to complete the remaining work according to the contract terms and to increase the speed of project execution.
The acting minister of mines also emphasized that the contracting company is obliged to fully implement all its commitments and responsibilities and to take practical steps to advance the project. However, no specific timeline for completing these obligations was provided.
The Mes Aynak project in Logar province is considered one of the largest mining investments in Afghanistan, with its contract signed years ago with a Chinese company. This project is being reiterated again amid ongoing delays and a lack of transparency in its execution process, which has consistently raised questions about the Taliban administration’s management and oversight of major mining contracts.
