Taliban Ministry Signs 30-Year Contract for Sequo Polymetallic Mine Extraction in Faryab

The Taliban’s Ministry of Mines and Petroleum has signed a contract for the extraction of the Sequo polymetallic mine in Kohistan district, Faryab province, with a domestic company. The contract involves an investment of $24.332 million and covers an area of 1.12 square kilometers.

Hedayatullah Badri, acting head of the ministry, said at the signing ceremony that the contract duration is set for 30 years and that its implementation is conditional on adherence to the principles, guidelines, and commitments outlined in the contract text.

According to him, the project’s commencement will create employment opportunities for approximately 130 Afghan citizens. Additionally, the royalty rate for this mine has been set at 16 percent of the pure gold extracted.

The Taliban administration continues to sign long-term mining contracts with domestic and foreign companies amid ongoing concerns about transparency, oversight mechanisms, and the actual share of profits benefiting the Afghan people—issues that demand further clarification and accountability from relevant officials.
