Humanitarian Aid Resumes for 136,000 in Nuristan Amid Road Blockades

Tom Fletcher, United Nations Deputy Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, announced that aid delivery to approximately 136,000 residents in the Barg-e-Matal and Kamdesh districts of Nuristan province has resumed. These residents faced severe difficulties over the past two months due to blocked access roads.

Fletcher wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) page that the assistance is now reaching those in need in these mountainous areas. He noted that the distribution operation is ongoing with the cooperation of international and local organizations.

According to released information, the International Committee of the Red Cross, the Afghan Red Crescent Society, and the World Food Programme are responsible for delivering the aid. These organizations are working to address the urgent needs of families affected by food shortages and a lack of essential supplies resulting from the road closures.

Nuristan province is a mountainous region in eastern Afghanistan where residents are particularly vulnerable to road access disruptions during cold seasons and natural disasters, making humanitarian access and services challenging.
