Jordan Launches Cross-Border Operations Against Smugglers in Syria, Heightening Border Tensions

Jordanian armed forces have announced that, in order to secure the northern borders of the country, they have conducted operations against weapons and drug smugglers in areas adjacent to Syria. According to Jordanian officials, these attacks targeted parts of southern Syria.

The official Petra news agency reported that these operations were carried out in response to the movements of smuggling groups and targeted locations used as bases and entry points for crossing into Jordanian territory. Jordan states these measures are part of ongoing security efforts to contain border threats.

Meanwhile, Syria’s Al-Ikhbariyeh network reported that following Jordanian airstrikes around the Al-Suwayda province, Jordanian forces fired illuminating flares along the border strip to reinforce control.

These developments come just days after Jordan announced cooperation with the United States in operations within Syrian territory against ISIS, which, according to Jordanian authorities, aims to counter transnational security threats.
