UN Backs Women Poultry Farmers in Laghman and Nangarhar

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the UN Transitional Structure Trust Fund, has initiated a program to improve the livelihoods of women in Afghanistan’s Laghman and Nangarhar provinces.

Through the program, 1,000 women from returnee families and host communities in Mehtarlam district of Laghman and Surkhrod district of Nangarhar have received support. The women were provided with poultry farming equipment, including chicken coops, feed, ready-to-raise chicks, and specialized training.

This initiative comes at a time of mounting economic challenges across Afghanistan, offering women not only access to nutritious food but also a reliable source of income.

As the Taliban administration continues to restrict women’s rights and employment opportunities, such international programs provide a practical pathway for families to build economic resilience and alleviate poverty.

Ongoing support from international organizations for Afghan women’s livelihoods—particularly in areas facing harsher restrictions—has become increasingly vital. Humanitarian agencies, including FAO, play a crucial role in ensuring food security and strengthening community-based capacities.
