FAO Distributes 100 Laser Land Levelers to Afghan Farmers to Improve Irrigation Efficiency

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), supported by the World Bank, has distributed 100 laser land levelers across Afghanistan in 2025. These machines are now jointly used by more than 23,000 farming families.
According to published information, these devices have enabled the leveling of approximately 12,500 hectares of agricultural land and have helped improve irrigation management. The use of laser land levelers ensures uniform water distribution in farmland.
Afghanistan has faced recurring droughts in recent years, and the reduction of water resources is one of the main challenges for the agriculture sector. Under such conditions, increasing water use efficiency can play a vital role in sustaining the livelihoods of farming families.
FAO has emphasized that this initiative aims to make effective use of limited water resources and can help reduce water wastage in agricultural areas—a matter of special importance given Afghanistan’s current climatic conditions.
