Germany Strongly Responds to Trump’s Remarks on Possible US NATO Withdrawal

Germany’s Foreign Minister has expressed deep concern over the possibility of the United States withdrawing from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). He emphasized that firm European support could prevent such an action. He stated that maintaining the clear commitment of European countries to this military alliance would play a decisive role in sustaining Washington’s cooperation with NATO.
Johan Wadhful, speaking to reporters in response to recent comments by US President Donald Trump regarding the potential US exit from NATO, said that these remarks have caused him concern. According to him, if Europe enhances its political and practical support for the alliance, such a decision could be averted.
The German Foreign Minister added that a clear commitment and solid backing from European members can persuade the US to continue its cooperation within the NATO framework. He emphasized that the alliance remains fundamentally important for the security of Germany and other member states.
Wadhful also pointed to the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO and the increased defense spending commitments by European countries, noting that the alliance is now stronger than before. He believes that instead of questioning NATO’s structure, attention should be focused on the benefits of membership.
He concluded by reminding that any US decision to leave NATO would require approval by the country’s Senate. Established after World War II, NATO remains one of the most significant military alliances in the Euro-Atlantic region.
