Pakistani Opposition Leader Urges Immediate Reopening of Afghanistan-Pakistan Routes

Mehmood Khan Achakzai, a politician and opposition leader in Pakistan’s parliament, has called for the immediate reopening of blocked routes between Afghanistan and Pakistan. He stated that the continued closure of these pathways causes significant economic damage to both countries and must be resolved as soon as possible.
According to Achakzai, there are eight main roads or highways connecting the two countries, employing millions of people either directly or indirectly. He emphasized that the stoppage of traffic on these highways has severely affected the livelihoods of people on both sides of the border.
The Pakistani politician added that Afghanistan and Pakistan depend on each other for trade and transportation, and the ongoing blockage of routes results in millions of dollars in losses daily. He believes that keeping these pathways open is vital for regional economic stability.
In recent weeks, following rising tensions between the Taliban administration and Islamabad, the crossings have been closed to passengers and commercial goods. The Torkham border crossing, one of the most important trade routes, plays a crucial role in supplying Afghanistan’s import needs. Its closure has put additional pressure on the country’s markets and residents.
Economic experts have previously warned that the continuation of such tensions, without considering the interests of the people, could further weaken the economic situation on both sides of the border. It is hoped that the Taliban administration will adopt a more responsible approach to prevent these consequences.
