Taliban Releases 207 Prisoners in Herat on Eid al-Fitr

Media outlets controlled by the Taliban administration have reported that 207 prisoners in Herat province were released from prison to mark the occasion of Eid al-Fitr. According to the Bakhtar news agency, this move was carried out under the order of the Taliban’s Supreme Court.

The report states that among those released were women and children. Additionally, 229 other prisoners received sentence reductions during their terms.

Despite the announcement, the Taliban administration has not provided details regarding the identities of the prisoners, their charges, or the lengths of their sentences. The lack of transparency regarding judicial cases and how they are handled has consistently drawn criticism from human rights organizations.

Legal experts emphasize that clear information about judicial processes and the reasons for detaining individuals is a fundamental principle of justice and accountability to the public—a principle that has faced serious challenges in Afghanistan in recent years.
