Miakhil: ‘War of Narratives’ Must Be Based on Reality, Not Misinformation

Shah Mahmood Miakhil, former Deputy Minister of Defense in the Islamic Republic and political analyst, says that strategic communication is essentially a ‘war of narratives’; however, this war will only be effective if it is grounded in objective reality rather than misinformation.
In his recent statement, Miakhil emphasized that the goal of strategic communication is to prevent an information vacuum among the public and the international community. He explained that if one side fails to share accurate information timely, the opposing side exploits this opportunity to spread its own narrative through false information.
He warned that the dissemination of false information can have serious consequences. According to him, when one side spreads misinformation, the ‘enemy’ uses that same information against them, resulting in diminished public trust in accurate information.
Miakhil noted that sometimes the opposition simultaneously spreads false information through multiple channels to undermine the credibility of their rival both nationally and internationally. He stressed that the effective solution is the timely and accurate sharing of information so that facts become the headline news and prevent the formation of misleading narratives.
