FAO: Over 1.7 Million Farming Families in Afghanistan Require Urgent Assistance

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has announced that more than 1.7 million farming families in Afghanistan are in urgent need of assistance. In its latest report, the organization described the livelihood conditions of these families as alarming.

According to the report, Afghans who have returned to the country after migration are among the most vulnerable groups. FAO added that the participation of returnees in agricultural activities has decreased, leaving them facing serious challenges in sustaining their livelihoods.

Agriculture is considered the backbone of Afghanistan’s economy, with a large portion of the population relying on it for subsistence. A decline in participation in this sector could have widespread consequences on food security and economic stability in rural areas.

While needs are increasing, it is expected that the Taliban administration take practical measures to prevent the crisis from deepening by facilitating farmers’ access to resources, improved seeds, and technical support; actions that have so far not been observed effectively or extensively.
