Taliban Authority Reports Handling 78 Women’s Rights Cases in One Week

The Taliban’s Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice announced that it dealt with 78 cases related to women’s rights across various parts of the country in the past week. These cases included domestic violence, inheritance disputes, marriages deemed “against Sharia,” and divorce cases.

In a statement, the ministry said that during the same period, it also resolved nine ethnic disputes and 40 other minor conflicts. However, no specific details have been provided about how these cases were examined, the mechanisms of investigation, or transparency guarantees in the decision-making process.

According to the statement, six individuals were also arrested on accusations of “witchcraft.” The Taliban administration has not released further information regarding the identities of those arrested or the types of documents and evidence involved.

This comes amid ongoing concerns from human rights organizations over recent years regarding the conduct of the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice. These organizations have called for transparency, adherence to fair trial principles, and the protection of fundamental citizen rights, especially those of women. Critics argue that in the absence of an independent judiciary and free access to legal representation, the handling of such cases requires serious oversight and accountability.
