Chicken Production in Kandahar Rises 42% After Trade Routes with Pakistan Close

Officials in Kandahar report a 42 percent increase in chicken production in the province following the closure of trade routes with Pakistan. Currently, four active chicken production factories in Kandahar supply approximately two million chicks to the market each month.

A manager of one of the chick production farms highlighted the growth in output and emphasized the need for increased support to expand operations. He added that if necessary conditions are provided, it will be possible to further increase production and fully meet domestic demand within the country.

Farm workers also expressed satisfaction with the creation of job opportunities, stating that providing such employment opportunities domestically has enabled more residents to find work and strengthened local production.

The Kandahar Directorate of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock announced that if the current trend continues, the province will achieve self-sufficiency in chick production within the next three years. Mohammad Hanif Haqmal, the directorate’s spokesperson, said that since last year, production has risen significantly and this positive trend is expected to continue.

In addition to chick production factories, about 1,200 active farms raising chickens and producing eggs operate in the districts of Daman, Arghandab, Zhery, Khakriz, and Arghistan. The output from these farms not only meets the needs of southern Afghanistan but is also supplied to other provinces.
