EU Highlights Radio as a Lifeline for Information and Education in Afghanistan

The European Union has emphasized on World Radio Day that radio remains one of the most effective and accessible means of communication and education throughout Afghanistan, playing a vital role in delivering messages to both urban centers and remote areas.

On Friday, 24th of Dalw, the EU posted on its X (formerly Twitter) account that radio reaches places where many other media outlets cannot. According to the European Union, the importance of this medium is especially undeniable when it comes to informing and educating Afghan women and girls.

In its statement, the EU said: “On World Radio Day, we honor this medium as a lifeline for information and education across Afghanistan.” The organization also stressed its support for independent, informative, and educational media and its cooperation to expand people’s access to credible and informative content.

Since the Taliban administration took control, imposing widespread restrictions on media activities—particularly visual media and the participation of women in various information sectors—radio has become one of the few relatively accessible platforms for disseminating information. Many media support organizations emphasize that backing independent media, especially radio, is critically important for enhancing public awareness and empowering citizens, particularly women and girls.

Media experts believe that in a country characterized by mountainous geography and a dispersed population across remote villages and districts, radio still holds a special place and can play a decisive role in education, health awareness, and emergency communication.
