Taliban Reacts to Extension of Afghanistan Sanctions Monitoring Group’s Mandate

Following the one-year extension of the mandate for the groups monitoring sanctions on Afghanistan by international bodies, Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Taliban administration, described the move as a “repetitive and failed experiment,” stating that the policy of pressure and sanctions has yielded no results.
In a message sent to the media, Mujahid emphasized that the continuation of sanctions and the maintenance of monitoring groups not only fail to help solve problems but also represent a repetition of approaches that, according to him, have proven ineffective in the past. He called on the international community, especially Western countries, to refrain from actions that he believes merely reproduce previously unsuccessful policies.
The Taliban spokesperson also urged Western countries to reconsider their current policies towards Afghanistan. At the same time, he welcomed the positions of China and Russia on this matter, claiming that Afghanistan is on the path to progress and requires cooperation rather than the extension of sanctions.
The mandate extension for these monitoring groups comes as the Taliban administration has yet to gain international legitimacy and continues to face widespread criticism over human rights issues, restrictions on women and girls, and the absence of an inclusive political structure—factors that are among the main reasons for the ongoing sanctions and international oversight.
