EU Stresses Safe and Dignified Return of Afghan Citizens Amid Humanitarian Concerns

The European Union and Pakistan reviewed the situation in Afghanistan and the country’s humanitarian needs during their 15th Joint Commission meeting in Brussels, focusing on the principles of returning Afghan citizens.

According to a press release from Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Union emphasized that any return of Afghan citizens from Pakistan to Afghanistan must be conducted in a safe manner, with human dignity, and in accordance with international standards. This requirement highlights serious human rights concerns given the current conditions under Taliban rule in Afghanistan.

The EU also welcomed ongoing talks between Pakistan and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), aimed at identifying and registering vulnerable cases to provide necessary support.

Observers note that the emphasis on international criteria for migrant returns reflects the global community’s apprehension about the consequences of a hasty repatriation to a country still grappling with humanitarian crises, widespread restrictions, and insufficient guarantees for citizens’ rights.
