Herat’s Grand Mosque: An 800-Year-Old Symbol of Urban Identity

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in Afghanistan has announced that Herat’s Grand Mosque, also known as the “Great Mosque of Herat,” is among the most prominent and breathtaking Islamic architectural landmarks in the country.

This historic structure, built over eight centuries ago, is not only a symbol of Islamic architecture in Herat but also holds a significant place among the major historical sites of Central Asia. It continues to draw researchers and cultural enthusiasts each year.

According to UN-Habitat, the preservation of such historical sites is crucial for maintaining urban identity and fostering a sense of pride and belonging among residents—an effort that requires sustainable attention and responsible cultural heritage management.

Cultural experts emphasize that proper preservation of these sites, beyond their religious and historical functions, can contribute to sustaining the collective memory of cities and maintaining a tangible link between future generations and their past.
