China Urges U.S. to Uphold ‘One China’ Principle Amid Rising Taiwan Tensions
China has called on the United States to remain committed to the ‘One China’ principle in response to Washington’s newly released national security strategy, urging a more cautious approach toward Taiwan.
Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of China’s State Council, told reporters that the U.S. must respect the One China principle and the provisions of the three joint communiqués between Beijing and Washington, and avoid actions that could escalate tensions.
According to Zhu, U.S. officials should not allow what Beijing refers to as a “separatist minority” on the self-governed island of Taiwan to steer China-U.S. relations toward confrontation. She reiterated China’s position that there is only one China in the world and that Taiwanese independence is incompatible with peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
Taiwan, which governs itself, receives political backing from several countries, including the United States. In recent months, positions and policies adopted by Washington and some of its allies, such as Japan, have heightened sensitivities and tensions in the Taiwan Strait—developments that Beijing has repeatedly warned could have serious consequences.
