Hanukkah Ceremony Targeted in Sydney Shooting; Several Suspects Arrested

A Jewish religious ceremony marking Hanukkah in Sydney, Australia, came under gunfire on Sunday, injuring several attendees and prompting an immediate police response, according to Australian media reports.
Initial reports suggest that armed individuals opened fire on the ceremony from atop a nearby bridge. Australian police have confirmed that two suspects were arrested in connection with the incident, and residents in surrounding areas were advised to shelter in place until authorities secured the scene.
Conflicting casualty reports have emerged from various international media outlets. Some have reported at least ten people injured, while Israeli media outlets have cited higher figures, including fatalities. Australian police have yet to release an official and confirmed toll.
Israeli media reported that among the victims was an Israeli rabbi affiliated with the Chabad movement, who was killed, and the head of the Australian-Israeli Jewish Council, who was reportedly injured. The Chabad group has confirmed the death of its religious envoy at the event.
Australian police sources told media that one of the gunmen was killed during an exchange with security forces, while another suspect involved in the shooting is currently receiving medical treatment under supervision. Authorities are continuing to investigate the motive and nature of the attack.
In response to the incident, Israel’s Foreign Minister blamed the shooting on antisemitism and urged greater attention to the safety of Jewish communities in Australia. Australian officials have stressed that a formal investigation is underway to uncover all aspects of the attack.
