New York Times Views Trump’s Midterm Election Defeat as Public Rejection, Urges Resignation

The American newspaper The New York Times, in an analysis of the results of the US midterm elections, emphasized the negative message from the public to Donald Trump, the country’s president, and called on him to step down by acknowledging this situation. Thomas Edsall, the author of the article, described Trump’s behavior and tone in recent speeches as signs of superficial changes and expressed hope that the current president would decide to resign; although, according to him, this possibility is unlikely.

The newspaper criticized Trump’s campaign efforts to influence the election process, including repeated claims of fraud and restrictions on mail-in voting, describing these actions as weakening American democracy. Additionally, it highlighted the Republicans’ defeat in states such as Kansas, Ohio, South Carolina, and Texas — traditional strongholds of the party — pointing out the decline in public trust and support for Trump’s approaches.

In another analysis, Edsall examined Trump’s personality and his potential reaction to the defeats, warning that these setbacks might lead the president to adopt a more confrontational stance towards his critics. He stressed that Trump will likely perceive the election loss not merely as a political failure but as a serious threat to his position and has so far not regarded stepping down as a viable option.

This analysis was published amid ongoing tensions between Trump and American institutions, with the midterm election results sending a clear message about how the American public views current policies.
