China Calls for Legal Framework to Prevent the Militarization of Outer Space

A spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strongly opposed the ongoing militarization of outer space, emphasizing that this issue poses a threat to collective peace and security. Geng Shuang stated that to prevent an arms race and the deployment of weapons in space, countries worldwide must negotiate and establish the necessary international legal documents.

He added that maintaining sustainable security in outer space is only possible through comprehensive cooperation among nations and the creation of agreed-upon frameworks. China has long pursued the adoption of a binding treaty to ban the militarization of space. In 2008, together with Russia, it submitted a draft treaty to the United Nations aimed at preventing the deployment of weapons and the threat to space objects.

Furthermore, Beijing reiterated in October 2026 the importance of negotiations to approve such documents as a means to control space armaments. These Chinese positions come amid growing global concern over the escalating arms competition in space.
