Tens of Thousands of German Students Protest Social Spending Cuts and Reintroduction of Mandatory Military Service

Tens of thousands of German students took to the streets on Saturday in over 30 cities to protest against cuts to social spending and the reintroduction of compulsory military service.

The demonstrations, organized by the youth movement ‘Generation Z Takes Action,’ aimed to oppose the German government’s policies in social, economic, and educational sectors. Protesters also demanded increased funding for education and measures to address the rising cost of living crisis.

The main marches took place in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt, and Cologne, with 29 other cities hosting similar gatherings. According to organizers, nearly 175,000 people had registered online to participate.

This protest movement, composed of high school and university students, emphasized that the demonstrations would be peaceful and opposed any form of violence. Key issues included social spending cuts, government failure to manage the climate crisis effectively, and disregard for young generations’ concerns about wars and conflicts.

German police deployed extensive security forces across various cities to prevent any potential unrest. In some urban centers, such as Berlin, Frankfurt, and Cologne, stores and shops boarded up their windows to protect their property.

In the populous state of North Rhine-Westphalia, police, the interior ministry, and intelligence agencies were on high alert. Approximately 44,000 people registered to attend demonstrations in this state alone.

Herbert Reul, the Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, affirmed the legal right to protest but warned that authorities would not allow extremist groups to exploit the gatherings to incite violence and disorder. He expressed concern over images of similar unrest in France and Italy and acknowledged the possibility that extremist groups might attempt to take advantage of the German protests.

Reul stressed a firm response to any riots, stating that officials would not permit anyone to disrupt public order or jeopardize citizens’ safety.
