UN envoy Faieq says Afghan people’s role in the country’s future must be guaranteed

Naseer Ahmad Faeeq, the acting head of Afghanistan’s mission to the United Nations, stressed the need to guarantee the Afghan people’s genuine participation in shaping the country’s future, saying this was one of the fundamental priorities.

Speaking today, Saturday, 2 Aqrab, on the occasion of the 81st anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and ahead of the 80th anniversary of Afghanistan’s membership in the body, he said Afghanistan has always been part of the international community and that the UN has stood by the people of the country during periods of crisis and displacement.

Faeeq added that now is the time to revive and strengthen the participation of the Afghan people, continue humanitarian assistance, and protect the rights of women and girls. He also stressed the need to advance efforts toward an Afghanistan that is peaceful, united and committed to its international obligations.

Since the Taliban administration returned to power, the people of Afghanistan have been deprived of genuine participation in political affairs and in the country’s decisive decision-making processes, whereas previously they played a role in shaping policy through presidential, national and provincial council elections.

Over the past more than five years, the United Nations and a number of countries have called for the formation of an inclusive government in Afghanistan, but these demands have so far produced no tangible result.
