Uzbek Officials and UNICEF Urge Easier Medicine Deliveries to Afghanistan

In a meeting between officials of Uzbekistan’s Medical Equipment and Pharmaceutical Industry Development Agency, UNICEF representatives and Uzbek pharmaceutical companies, emphasis was placed on facilitating the supply and delivery of medicines to Afghanistan. The meeting was held in Uzbekistan and discussed issues including Afghanistan’s access to international markets to buy high-quality Uzbek medicines, compliance with global quality standards and the strengthening of regional cooperation.
Transparency in the medicine procurement process, voluntary procedures, mechanisms for signing bilateral agreements and opportunities for sending medicines to Afghanistan were also among the other topics of the meeting. The Uzbek delegation, together with UNICEF representatives, also visited the project to build the dedicated pharmaceutical complex ‘Bio Pharma City’ and the Pharmaceutical Technical University in Tashkent.
Despite these efforts, the affordability and stable access to the medicines needed by the people of Afghanistan still face many challenges, requiring serious attention and practical action from the Taliban administration and international institutions.
