UNESCO says Jam Minaret needs urgent attention over natural threats

UNESCO’s office in Kabul has warned that the Jam Minaret, a World Heritage-listed site, faces serious risks because of natural threats and maintenance difficulties, and needs urgent attention.
According to the organisation, with financial support from the Aliph Foundation, monitoring of the minaret’s condition, efforts to reduce flood-related risks and support for local residents are continuing. These measures are aimed at reducing the vulnerability of the historic site and improving access to the area.
UNESCO added that the construction of a bridge in the area has also been completed. The bridge will make it easier for rescue teams to reach the site and will facilitate the safe movement of local residents.
At the same time, the Aga Khan Foundation, with financial support from the Aliph Foundation, has begun work to strengthen the structural integrity of the Jam Minaret and ensure its long-term protection.
UNESCO’s office stressed that protecting the Jam Minaret is part of the responsibility to safeguard humanity’s shared heritage and pass it on to future generations. The minaret is located in Ghor province and is considered one of Afghanistan’s most prominent historical monuments.
