UK Urges Taliban to Lift Restrictions on Afghan Women

The United Kingdom’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Richard Lindsay, has stated that for Afghanistan to make genuine progress, the sweeping restrictions imposed on women by the Taliban administration must be lifted.
On Thursday, November 26, Lindsay held an online meeting with several women from various provinces of Afghanistan to better understand the challenges they face under the current conditions. In a message posted on the social media platform X, he stressed that the resilience and perseverance of Afghan women in the face of pressure is inspiring and deserving of international attention.
Since returning to power in 2021, the Taliban has imposed severe limitations on women’s freedoms, including banning girls above sixth grade from attending school and barring female students from universities. Numerous international organizations, including the UK, have repeatedly condemned these policies as violations of fundamental human rights.
Despite mounting global pressure, the Taliban administration has shown no indication of reversing its decisions, leaving Afghan women in a difficult situation with limited access to education and employment.
