Iraqi lawmaker calls for war compensation claim against US

Sumea Al-Hilfi, a member of Iraq’s parliament, has called on the government to pursue compensation from the United States over civilian casualties and the destruction of infrastructure during military operations.

She said Iraq has suffered heavy losses in recent years and that many of the country’s citizens have been victims. According to Al-Hilfi, protecting Iraq’s national rights and its citizens requires that all legal avenues be examined.

Al-Hilfi said the call for compensation is not merely a political issue, adding that it is linked to international agreements, the details of each incident and who was responsible, as well as bilateral agreements on the presence of foreign forces in Iraq.

She also referred to Law No. 20 of 2009, saying it could provide a legal basis for compensation for those affected by military operations and military mistakes.

According to the lawmaker, before submitting an official request, the Iraqi government should accurately assess the extent of the damage and then move to pursue the issue through political and legal channels.
