Trump calls for immediate end to Ukraine war to curb fuel prices
US President Donald Trump has called for an immediate negotiated end to the Russia-Ukraine war amid a rise in diesel prices in the United States. He said Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil infrastructure had disrupted the country’s diesel refining capacity and added to pressure on fuel markets.
Trump wrote on Monday on the Truth Social platform that Russia had lost control of its diesel industry because of the war with Ukraine. He also said the “ridiculous and endless” war must stop, adding that, in his view, 25,000 people, most of them soldiers, are being killed in the conflict every month.
The US president had previously repeatedly asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to stop attacks on Russian oil refineries. He said those attacks were helping push up global diesel prices.
The unprecedented rise in diesel prices in the United States has increased pressure on the White House. The average diesel price in the US has climbed to more than $6.48 per gallon, setting a new record.
In another message, Trump also defended his record against US media outlets. He claimed the White House was not acting against the free press, but was instead taking on what he called “fake news.”
The Russia-Ukraine war is considered one of the events affecting the global energy market, and attacks on oil and refinery facilities on both sides have repeatedly affected fuel prices in international markets.
