Nationwide Power Outage Plunges Cuba Into Darkness Again

Cuba has once again been hit by a nationwide power outage, with authorities saying a complete collapse of the energy grid has plunged the entire island into darkness. The outage has affected more than 9 million residents.

Cuba’s Energy Ministry said the country’s energy network had completely failed, cutting electricity across the country. According to reports, this is the seventh nationwide blackout in Cuba since the start of this year.

The report adds that since the end of 2024, Cuba has experienced 12 nationwide blackouts. The repeated outages highlight the severity of the energy crisis in the country.

A severe fuel shortage, aging infrastructure and the oil embargo imposed on Cuba have been cited as the main causes of the widespread blackout. Earlier, Cuba’s power company said in August that the fuel shortage had placed heavy pressure on the grid.

Residents of Cuba were left without electricity for more than 36 hours in August. Cuba is an island nation in the Caribbean and has long been grappling with persistent economic and service-related problems under the pressure of US sanctions and restrictions.
