UN Security Council to Review Human Rights and Women’s Situation in Afghanistan
The United Nations Security Council will hold a meeting today to review the situation in Afghanistan, with the discussion focusing on the human rights situation, particularly the restrictions imposed on women and girls, alongside political, security and economic issues.
The meeting will be held on Wednesday, 25 September, and Roza Otunbayeva, head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and the UN special representative for Afghanistan, will present her quarterly report on the country’s situation to Security Council members.
According to the announced agenda, Afghanistan’s political, security and economic situation will also be examined at the meeting. However, the human rights conditions and the impact of the Taliban administration’s restrictions on women and girls have been described as among the most important issues to be discussed.
Since returning to power in August 2021, the Taliban administration has imposed sweeping restrictions on women and girls. These restrictions, including bans on education and work, have repeatedly been raised in reports and international meetings as one of the most serious concerns about the situation in Afghanistan.
UNAMA is the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, whose mandate is set by the Security Council, and its periodic reports are considered among the main sources for reviewing Afghanistan’s situation in the council.
