Trump says war with Iran will end before or after congressional midterms
US President Donald Trump has claimed that the war with Iran will end before the congressional midterm elections or immediately afterwards. He made the remarks as part of his comments were also tied to the economic consequences of the war for the United States.
According to Al Jazeera, Trump also claimed that Iran wants to reach a deal, but that he will not sign any agreement unless it is, in his words, “perfect.” He gave no further details about the claim.
The US president also said again, without providing evidence, that Iran will not obtain nuclear weapons and that the United States will not allow it. The comments came as Iran’s nuclear programme has consistently been described by the country’s officials as peaceful.
In another part of his remarks, Trump said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should stop attacks on diesel facilities in Russia. He also claimed that China has treated the United States “fairly” in recent years and that the US is ahead of China in artificial intelligence.
Speaking about Venezuela, he said elections in that country can only be held when, in his view, they are ready for them. Responding to a question about a summit involving Gulf states and Iran, Trump said he did not “care” about it.
The US congressional midterm elections are one of the country’s major political events and usually have a direct impact on the balance of power between Republicans and Democrats in the House of Representatives and the Senate.
