UN Fact-Finding Committee Voices Alarm Over Continued Rights Abuses in Syria
The fact-finding committee on Syria has expressed concern over the continuing human rights violations in the country and the fate of hundreds of people remaining unknown. The committee says that since the armed clashes with Syrian Democratic Forces in January, hundreds of people are still missing.
In a report submitted to the Human Rights Council in Geneva, the committee stressed that the number of trials held against armed elements and human rights violators over the events in Syria’s coastal region and western areas in early 2025, as well as the incidents in Suwayda in July 2025, has been very limited.
The report says that deaths recorded in detention centres, the arrest of activists, the spread of violent thinking, threats against women, especially Syrian women activists, and the resumption of clashes in Suwayda are among the worrying developments.
The fact-finding committee also stressed that all perpetrators of human rights violations in Syria should be prosecuted without discrimination and on an equal basis.
The report comes as Syria’s new rulers, after the سقوط of Bashar al-Assad’s government, had spoken of a new phase in the country under the slogan of ensuring justice and ending violence. Suwayda is located in southern Syria and has in recent months been one of the main centres of tension and conflict in the country.
